Discernment

The clear-eyed ability to see through manipulation.

Discernment visual 1

Penetrating Empathy

Ignore what people say they're are doing and follow the trail of dopamine. When you understand what they're getting out it, the random behaviors will usually make more sense.

Discernment visual 2

Separating Signal and Noise

Performance, posturing, emotional theatrics, and drama are often intended to conceal facts -- or the lack thereof. Try to get to the root of the actual issue and decide whether they're concealing something or just trying to push an unsupported opinion.

Discernment visual 3

Manufactured Urgency

False deadlines and panic mode pronouncements are the typical tools to try and get by your critical thinking. Actual emergencies, in fact, require careful observation and calm, methodical thinking.

Discernment visual 4

Pattern vs. Promise

Consider people, institutions, systems, and tools based on their verifiable track record. Words come easy, but consistent structural patterns give a better picture of what you can actually expect.

Discernment visual 5

Distrust All Claims

Use simple, neutral questions to test the likely validity of a claim. Manipulative people wobble a lot when asked for concrete specifics.

Discernment visual 6

Handing Out Unearned Obligations

Watch out for guilt trips and implied debts. Never accept them. Unsolicited favors might often return as unbalanced requests. Be wary.

Discernment visual 7

Who's Actually in Charge?

Organizational charts and social politeness often belie where the real leverage sits. Pay attention to whose ideas move forward: that's the real power center in any group.

Discernment visual 8

Verifying Data

Second-hand summaries and hearsay are everywhere. You need to either trace these comments to a verifiable source, or just think them through carefully and evaluate whether you can really act on what you're hearing.

Discernment visual 9

Detecting Deflections

It's never a good sign when someone's arguing against a point you didn't actually make, or an argument you didn't have. Point out the discrepancy and bring the discussion back to the actual disagreement.

Discernment visual 10

Detached Observation

Stepping outside the emotional blast radius of an active conflict to observe it clinically. You cannot accurately diagnose the health of a machine while your hand is caught in the gears.

Discernment visual 11

Bad Faith

Know the difference between curiosity and ragebait. Run from bad-faith arguments and incendiary behaviors. There's no winning an argument that doesn't actually exist.

Discernment visual 12

Verify Your Own Thinking

Peel back the layers of convenient narrative, assumptions, and your own tendecies toward wishful thinking until you reach irreducible, provable facts. True competence begins only when you build on bedrock truth.
